Layers

After creating Floating Jellyfish I decided to use some of those techniques to create this piece. It has about 15 layers and is very well received. I'm thinking that the colors are very appealing to people and I was told that most people like a square canvas. Something for me to think about as I am trying to get as many pieces out there as possible.

New Techinque

This was a new techinque and medium together that took a lot of patience for me but turned out well and it's always fun to allow yourself the freedom to create something different.

Inspiration

This was a piece that was inspired by another artist in Laguna. I loved the colors he has used and it was different then the palette I was working with at the time. It is a bright piece and makes me smile.

Timing

This piece took 3 years. I say that because it is actually a painting on top of a painting. The first painting is mostly purple and very dark. It was showcased in a friends house and every time I looked at it I wanted to change it. I just wasn't good enough. I think it is amazing to look at this piece and wonder what would have been created if there wasn't a three year gap.

My Favorite

This is one of my personal favorite pieces because I was experimenting with a new techinque. I love the way different colors shine through with different light.

New Medium

This piece is the first thing people see when they walk into the Millers house and the light catches it beautifully. This was the first time I worked with gold leaf and now I am hooked. I love experimenting with new ideas and this one came out just as I had hoped.

Most Popular

This was the first painting I ever sold and still the most popular. This piece reminds me of the fall and it is one that I am trying to duplicate but still having trouble 5 years later..

Freedom

It is always an interesting journey when someone commissions you to do a painting for them and they give you general colors and an idea of what they like. This is so much more difficult because all my pieces are originals and to try and duplicate them is nearly impossible. There is the tension of will they like it even though it's the colors they want but the painting went in a different direction then they may imagine. I don't know if it is possible as an artist to just create pieces and people will buy them or to have to do original art work for other people, maybe that is where my confidence as an artist needs to grow. To be commissioned to paint is an amazing opportunity and I need to remember that my pieces are original and different because I created them.. Still figuring this one out.

Questions..

As I begin this journey as an artist I want to make sure I am also a smart business woman. I don't have a network of artists to consult with right now and I found the most amazing website to help me, artbusiness.com.. Really the author is spot on with everything.. Questions from how do you sell art in a recession to the layout of your website are all there.

Living the Dream

I heard a man say that if you are going to put your name on something it better be excellent because it represents you. Well that is how I feel about my life as an artist. I want my paintings to be excellent and you can't force that. I want to be an artist, wait I am an artist, I want to be a paid artist and that takes time and patience. Time I have, patience is a whole other story. I am learning how to do things my way and it might be slower than some but I am able to enjoy my life now while I pursue my dream. Some days I am overwhelmed by how much I need to do and others I am completely content with where I am at. I guess that is the tension I live in. I have chosen this and I am just now learning how to live with it..
